Generic police tape

A 10-year-old girl was found dead Monday morning about a half-mile downstream from Bay City’s Riverside Park.

The girl, Promise Echefu, who is suspected to have drowned, went missing Saturday evening. She was swimming with her mother, who was also found dead Saturday evening and is also suspected of drowning. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department released the girl’s name.

The mother, Kelechi Echefu, 35, was at the park with her two daughters and boyfriend. The Matagorda County Sheriff’s Office said Echefu and her two daughters were visiting Bay City from Houston.

Brandi Reeder, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department assistant commander game warden, said the water at the spot where the two disappeared is known for its deceptively strong current.

“There have been multiple drownings there in that vicinity,” Reeder said.

She said fatigue may have played a role in the drowning because the mother and child had been outdoors for several hours.
