Is it a wasp, hornet, yellow-jacket, or a bee?

Most folks call these wasps yellow jackets. In fact, they're common paper wasps; scientifically, Polistes exclamans. Building nests on walls and eaves of houses, they are good because they help control pests by feeding captured caterpillars to wasp larvae. They can be a stinging pest if they nest near where people go, like these did in a decorative plant on a deck. Right after this was taken they swarmed and the photographer beat a hasty retreat.

Two people were transported to a Victoria hospital after being attacked by bees.

Victoria firefighters responded about 4:25 p.m. to the 1700 block of East Red River where two people suffered from bee stings at their residence, said David Kahlich, battalion chief for the Victoria Fire Department.

Kahlich said the two people were transported to a Victoria hospital for observation.
