Mary Doyle Rogers Meredith

Born on Aug. 11, 1945



VICTORIA - On May 22, 2017 Mary Doyle Rogers Meredith passed away at Sodalis Memory Care in Victoria, Texas from complications of Dementia. Mary and her husband Paul had resided in Victoria since 2003.

Mary Doyle Rogers was born to Louis Hayes Rogers and Margaret Smart Rogers on August 11, 1945 in Dallas, Texas. The daughter of a petroleum geologist she moved often, living in Louisiana in Minden, Shreveport, and New Orleans; Wichita, Kansas, and Fort Worth, Texas. Mary graduated Valedictorian, Class of 1963 from Pascal High, Ft Worth. She attended University of Texas in Austin and Texas Christian University, Ft Worth, completing a BS in Mathematics at UT. She was initiated into Phi Beta Kappa Honor Fraternity. At UT in 1965 she met her husband to be Paul. They married February 11, 1967 in Houston.

Mary pursued a first career with distinction as a systems analyst and programmer for both scientific and commercial systems with Ft Worth National Bank, Humble Oil (Exxon), and Mellon Bank (Pittsburgh). She earned her MBA at the Graduate School of Business, University of Pittsburgh (Katz School) and a Doctorate in Business at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana (Kelly School). She was a Member of Mensa, P.E.O (a sisterhood serving women worldwide), Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society (Business) and a sister in Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity (Gamma Psi Chapter, TCU).

After earning her doctorate, Mary entered a second career, teaching, as a Business Professor, first at Georgia Southern, Statesboro Georgia for six years and at the B. I. Moody School of Business, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Louisiana for 21 years. She retired in December; 2003. She was always a teaching professor, demanding much of her students, but compassionate, teaching life's lessons as well as sharing academic knowledge with her beloved students.

Relocating to Victoria, Texas Mary began a third career as a community volunteer, starting as a Texas Master Gardener in 2004 and training as a Texas Master Naturalist in 2005. She also participated in the Native Plant Society of Texas program. Passionate about environmental conservation she strove to educate the public, young and old about conserving Texas' fragile ecology as a writer for the Victoria Advocate and as a presenter to groups and civic organizations. In 2016 she received the Presidential Call to Service Award from President Barack Obama for her hours of service as a Texas Master Naturalist. Mary served Phi Beta Kappa as a District Officer and Representative for many years.

Mary is survived by her husband of 50 years, Paul Henry Meredith one child Katherine Meredith Williams (Mary Katherine) of San Jose, California and two brothers, Samuel Hayes Rogers and Louis Carlton Rogers, both of Austin, Texas. Mary has one granddaughter, Honor Elizabeth Williams of San Jose, California.

A private conge (a gathering) to celebrate Mary's life will be announced later. In lieu of flowers or other remembrances Mary would prefer donations to the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Southwest Louisiana, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, P. O. Box 40100, Lafayette, LA 70504, annual Undergraduate Award.
