W.R. 'Billy' Zwerschke Sr.

Born on July 14, 1933



PORT LAVACA - W.R. 'Billy' Zwerschke, Sr. 84 of Victoria, TX passed away on August 24, 2017. He was born July 14, 1933 to the late W.W. and Thelma Madden Zwerschke. He graduated from Port Lavaca High School in 1951 then joined the U.S. Navy and received an honorable discharge.

Billy spent his earlier years helping run Calhoun County Butane, 3B Trucking Company and owning Circle Z Ranch & Feed Store and was CEO of BZ and Associates. He served on Port Lavaca City Council as councilman and Mayor Pro Tem and was active in the Calhoun County Fair Assn, 4-H, FFA and San Antonio Livestock Show to support the youth. Billy was retired from SFOA (Football officiating). A member of the Masonic Lodge for 60 plus years, Billy served in the Port Lavaca Volunteer Fire Dept. (1953-1980), where he served as deputy fire chief.

He worked for Calhoun County as Emergency Management Coordinator 1985-2000. He was a strong supporter of First Responders, Law Enforcement and Industrial Plants. Upon retiring from Calhoun County Billy became active in FEMA, IAEM and Home Land Security. He received a masters' degree in Business Administration with a minor in Risk Management at Madison University.

A life member of IAEM, he was the past IAEM Certification Commissioner and served as President 2000-2001. Billy provided training in Weapons of Mass Destruction, Mass Casualty Recover, Public Safety, Flood Plain Program, community affairs and emergency management.

He worked as a FEMA hazardous mitigation specialist and was an observer/controller of WMD and hurricane exercises for the TX Division of Emergency Management.

He is survived by his daughters, Terrye Gossett Lenhart (Darrell) of Port Lavaca, and Cyndi Baxter (Troy) of Port Comfort, Michelle Castaneda (Adam), son Lindsey Zwerschke of Lolita. Grandchildren, Ryan Gossett (Stephanie), Stefanie Gossett (Mark Tschatschula), Kyle Gossett (Tess), Krystan Rivera (John), Kayln Runge, Sarah Blackman (Brent), Connor Hendry (Desiree Walker), Bailey and Andy Zwerschke, Kelsey Robinson, Kolton Brothers and Devyn Castaneda, Lauren Eure, Cameron, Drew, Zain, Carson and Brantley Zwerschke, 16 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, WR (Scooter) Zwerschke, Jr., first wife Virginia Zwerschke, second wife, Betty Lynn Rose, brother AJ (Bubba) Zwerschke, son in-law, Chris Runge, numerous aunts and uncles.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of choice.

Memorial Services will be 2 pm on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Grace Funeral Chapel.1604 W. Austin St. Port Lavaca, TX with Pastor Danny Dawdy officiating.

Full military honors under the auspices of the Calhoun County Combined Honor Guard will be presented.
