Melvin R. Scherer

Melvin R. Scherer Sr., 81, passed away Jan. 19, 2008 after a lengthy illness from Parkinson's disease. He was born Aug. 10, 1926, in Victoria County, to the late Joseph T. and Emma Beck Scherer. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served on the church council.

Though out his life, he was involved in agriculture, both farming and ranching. He enjoyed raising cattle and took great pride in the improvements he made to his ranching operation. As a successful businessman, he co-owned and operated Victoria Oliver Company for 40 years. He served his community as founding member and director of the South Texas Farm and Ranch Show, was a member of the board of directors of the Victoria Electric Cooperative for 18 years, and participated in the Victoria Chamber of Commerce as the first chairman of the agricultural committee. As a result of his hard work and commitment, he was presented the Outstanding Agriculture Award by the Greater Victoria Area Chamber in 1995, and the Victoria Soil and Water Conservation District Outstanding Conservation Business Individual Award. He was an honorary member of the Victoria High School FFA and a longtime supporter of the Victoria youth through his support of the Junior Livestock Show.

Melvin is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Janett; sons, Melvin Scherer Jr. and wife, Marilyn, Calvin Scherer and wife, Rena; grandsons, Travis Scherer and Bradley Scherer, all of Victoria; grandsons Melvin Scherer III (Trey) and wife, Mona, of Brenham, Matthew Scherer and wife, Kristen, of Little Elm; great-grandsons, Melvin Raleigh Scherer IV and Caeden Scherer; and a brother, Welder Scherer of Corpus Christi.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Mark Scherer; brothers, Roy Scherer, Dennis Scherer, Lawrence Scherer, and Arthur Scherer; and two sisters, Burnette Ohrt and Aleen Kalinowski.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today, Jan. 21, 2008, at Rosewood Funeral Chapels.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at Trinity Lutheran Church, the Rev. Barney Matocha officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Melvin Scherer III, Matthew Scherer, Travis Scherer, Bradley Scherer, David Ohrt, and Ray Scherer.

Donations may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church Building Fund or Hospice of South Texas.
