Letters to the editor

Editor, the Advocate:

The Victoria County Commissioners Court’s behavior in attacking our First Amendment rights at the Victoria Public Library is indulging despicable behavior. Commissioners are either grossly and egregiously ignorant or are cynically stirring up the right-wing base over banning certain books.

If the court is to foist its views on this matter, I would also ask the court to ban all Christian literature and the Bible, in all its forms, because it preaches violence and unreasonable laws. Here are a few things to consider from the Bible, although there are many more. How many Victoria County residents would support these rules?

Exodus 21:7 permits selling a daughter into slavery. What would a good price for her be?

Exodus 35:2 clearly sates working on the sabbath calls for the death penalty. Which sabbath is applicable here? Is it the Jewish sabbath? Or, Sunday, the Christian sabbath?

Leviticus 11:7 states touching the skin of a dead pig makes one unclean. What does this mean for the sports teams in the Crossroads? Must all those associated with athletic programs wear gloves during the spring training and fall football season?

Deuteronomy 22:5 states a “woman shall not wear a man’s garment, nor shall a man put on a woman’s cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God.” Do the Victoria County Commissioners Court plan to bar pantsuits for women? Or, will it also bar kilts for men of Scottish heritage?

Deuteronomy 22:8 states “When you build a new house, you shall make a parapet for your roof, that you may not bring the guilt of blood upon your house, if anyone should fall from it.” Neither my house nor the ones in my neighborhood have a parapet. Will the Court force me to retrofit my house?

Deuteronomy 22:9-11 prohibits planting different crops, using different animals to plow a field or wear clothing of wool and linen mixed together.

I urge the Victoria City Council to stand firm and side with the Public Library and our First Amendment freedoms.

George Schwarz, Victoria

Molly Ivins, George?! She passed away about 15 years ago, and Victoria is a very long way from Austin in that regard. I doubt it occurred to anyone here, and I really can't imagine why it would.

This letter might make sense if the author were writing for the Hebrew people of 350 BC. These are all Old Testament quotes, and while they have an historic value, they are not followed today by Christians.

As for the banning of books, I think that common sense should rule and very few books should be banned at all, if ever, for adults. With teens and children, it's a different story. Sadly, looks like some books have gotten into the library that are problematic.

Bull! These Old Testament quotes were no more acceptable in 350 BC than they are today. Don’t cover for them. Find another way to reconcile your religious beliefs.

Mary Ann Wenske

What’s your point, C Droost? There are no Hebrews here arguing for these quotes and reconciling them to anyone’s religion.

Why am I not surprised that some of you don’t understand I am channeling Molly Ivins? And that I am ridiculing the county commissioners?

Here, here. Thanks George, and thanks Victoria Advocate for the voices of reason. Anyone of us could go to library and find something we find offensive, or we can look for anything we have interest in. Nothing is forced on anyone. It’s sad that our local commissioners would challenge our first amendment rights from their should be a-political positions….Glen Ullman
