Letters to the editor

Editor, the Advocate:

As the South Texas Area Chairman for Prosperity Bank and on behalf of our entire Prosperity Bank Area Banking Family, I want to express my sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the 21st annual Braggin’ Rights fishing tournament and fundraiser benefiting Golden Crescent Habitat for Humanity. This tournament has long been an integral fundraiser so that Golden Crescent Habitat can continue to build homes, communities and hope in our area.

This year’s tournament was extra special in that the event was held in memory of Tom Followwill, who tragically lost his life last summer in a drowning accident while wade-fishing near Port O’Connor. Since then, the Followwill family have become strong boater safety advocates through a program they are launching called “Saved By The Anchor.” This awareness campaign reminds all wading fishermen of the importance of throwing out an anchor to secure your boat while wade fishing, especially if you are leaving the boat unmanned.

At the tournament this year, we had record-setting attendance of bank customers and employees, Friends of Habitat and an awesome support group of the Followwill family, including Tom’s Aggie friends and many fine folks from our area medical community. At the start of the live auction, we set out a challenge to the crowd to see if our 12 live auction items could raise $30,000. If we could reach that goal, extra funds would be used to construct a Habitat house in honor of Tom, named “The House that Tom Followwill Built.” At the completion of the live auction, we proudly announced that $34,600 had been raised. But it gets even better. We then had a generous donor step forward praising the awesome things Habitat does in our community, and this local family agreed to match the auction fundraising.

In total, this year’s tournament raised a record-breaking $76,000 benefiting Golden Crescent Habitat! This is enough to reach the fundraising goal of the event and build a house for a hardworking family in need of a safe, affordable home.

Once again, thank you to all the volunteers, participants, fishermen and everyone else who donated, bid, bought, served and cooked that weekend. All of you are to be credited for the successful event.

John Zacek, chairman, South Texas Area, Victoria
