Refugio County Memorial Hospital damage

Refugio County Memorial Hospital was severely damaged during Hurricane Harvey. The hospital lost two roof mounted air conditioning units creating holes in the roof that allowed water into the building.

More than three years after Hurricane Harvey devastated much of South Texas, three critical institutions in the Crossroads are still battling with their insurance companies over how much damage the storm caused and how much money they are owed.

The Refugio County Memorial Hospital District, Refugio County, and the Victoria Independent School District have all filed lawsuits against their insurers, each accusing the carriers of not paying enough to adequately rebuild after Harvey.

Why are the settlements between Refugio County Memorial Hospital and its insurers, Fair American and Lloyd’s, confidential?

Grace Butler

Settlements almost always are. Part of agreeing to settle is to avoid either side admitting publicly they were "wrong". So the insurer is probably paying a certain amount and the hospital is agreeing to not say anything else about it...happens all the time.

As for if that's agreeable...sometimes it's the only way parties are willing to settle.
