PORT O’CONNOR — As 16 kids in kayaks clustered together in the shallows, RJ Shelly pointed toward a sandpiper wandering the shores of Boggy Bayou.

The bird’s curved beak, Shelly said, allows it to dig for burrowed crabs along the beach. As the kids set out across the bayou, Shelly told them to pay close attention to the other species flying around.

Daniel Beltran, 14, of Port Lavaca, examines blue crabs in a trap sitting in Boggy Bayou during a field trip held by a Calhoun County YMCA’s summer camp on Wednesday. To read a complete story about the trip, click here.
