GOLIAD — Self-described history buff Gaylen Mattison is criss-crossing the nation to experience notable historical sites with his own eyes.

Mattison, 64, of Southern California, has taken in the sights of the Black Hills in South Dakota — where battles were waged in The Great Sioux War of 1876 — and took a pitstop in San Antonio to bear witness to the Alamo.
